INITIAL SITUATION
Fire risks in painting booths
- Use of flammable liquid paints or coating materials
- Electrical voltage at spraying guns in combination with flammable paints
- Formation of explosive atmospheres from finely sprayed paint and coating materials
- Ignition of the powder spray mist at the pistol or powder cloud on duster, especially in the electrostatic painting process
- Bad grounding of the parts to be painted
- Color deposits in cabins, filters or washouts
- Filter or separating cyclones
EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM
High demands on the extinguishing system
The Liebherr paint system consists of three painting areas: two spray booths with color mist filters as well as a connected paint storage including handling area.
Alongside the required personnel-, room- and object protection, the extinguishing system should minimize production downtime in the event of fire. The spread of a fire to other areas and components should be actively prevented. The extinguishing system must be compatible with mobile extinguishing systems, so that they can also be used by firefighters if needed.
Efficient and tailor-made
To ensure the necessary fire protection, Liebherr had three different technologies to choose from: the classic sprinkler system, a CO2 gas extinguishing system and the compressed air foam system (CAFS) from Rosenbauer. After extensive analysis, the CAFS concept proved itself as the best overall solution. It guarantees the highest extinguishing efficiency and safety against backburning in a very simple and cost effective system.
Self-sufficient solution
The Liebherr foam extinguishing system is a purely mechanical solution like many Rosenbauer CAFS systems. It works without engines and pumps and does not need an external energy supply. Compressed air functions as the energy carrier, whereby a self-sufficient and reliable operation is ensured at all times in a real emergency.
The system is installed in a very short time. Wiring work was not needed and adjusting to the pipework was also not necessary. The future repair and maintenance effort will be minimal thanks to the simple technology.
LIEBHERR
The Liebherr family business was founded in 1949 and is one of the largest building machinery manufacturers in the world. 32,600 employees work in over 100 companies on all continents and on 29 manufacturing sites in twelve countries, five of which are in Austria. The products include the complete model range of mobile cranes, hydraulic excavators, dump trucks, wheel loaders, crawler tractors and loaders, also ship--, container- and gantry cranes, tool machinery, aircraft equipment and traffic technology, as well as cooling and refrigerating equipment.
Surroundings at high risk of fire. Efficient solution.
Liebherr's wheel loader competence center is located in Bischofshofen, Austria. Between 2,000 and 3,000 wheel loaders with weights of 5 to 31 tonnes are developed and manufactured annually. All painted parts – from the wheel loader bucket right down to the vehicle frames – get their protective and paint coats in the in-house paint system.
